How to read the confidence tags
Ramian in ninety seconds
Ramian is a five-launch ridge site in Golestan province, northern Iran, on the outer slope of the Alborz where the mountains drop onto the Caspian plain. The main launch, run by an operator called Flyland, sits at 819 m and faces north through west; the highest, Al Hadi, sits at 1,249 m about 1.9 km along the same ridge. All four north-facing launches share one landing on the valley floor at 464 m, needing a glide of roughly 3.5:1 in still air — comfortable on any modern wing, though that figure assumes no headwind, no sink and an arrival at ground level, none of which you should plan on.
What makes it work is that plain. From April to October the prevailing surface wind is northerly — blowing in off it — peaking at 53 % frequency in early July. From 12 October the flow reverses to southerly, which puts the launches in the lee and feeds the only hazard anybody has bothered to record: a rotor area on one flank of the Flyland take-off.
The catch is that almost none of the flying detail has ever been published. There is no cloudbase figure, no climb-rate report, no stated season, no cross-country record and no description of the landing field anywhere in the public record, in any language. Ramian is a real, developed, commercially operated site that the international flying world has simply never documented.
The short version, if you are planning a trip
- Best window: May through September on the prevailing-wind evidence Derived — but no operator has stated a season Unverified.
- Ask what the wind does on launch. The terrain model puts Flyland’s fall line at about 293° (WNW) while the prevailing summer wind is northerly, and there is higher ground 3 km due north. Why that matters →
- You cannot just turn up. Foreign pilots need a permit and a named local pilot who takes responsibility for them. Solo flying by visitors is discouraged nationally. Reported
- Bring cash. No international bank card works anywhere in Iran. The site fee for foreign pilots is €10 a flight and the shuttle is 150,000 toman a ride. Reported
- Pair it with Tangerah. 75 km north-east, faces S/SW, so between the two you cover most of the compass. Reported
- Assume no helicopter is coming. Mountain rescue in Iran is ground-based Red Crescent. Fly within reach of a vehicle.
Why fly here
Most of Iran’s flying reputation was built on the dry side of the country: the Rokh near Isfahan, where cloudbase reaches 7,000 m in high summer; Kerend-e Gharb in the Zagros, where the 400-kilometre flights happen; the great brown thermal engines of the central plateau. That is the Iran the world has heard about.
Ramian is the opposite of all of it. You launch out of a temperate rainforest.
The Alborz here forms a wall between the Iranian plateau and the Caspian Sea, and the whole north side of that wall is covered in the Hyrcanian forest — a broadleaf woodland that has been growing more or less continuously for 25 to 50 million years, survived the ice ages that flattened the rest of Europe’s temperate forest, and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2019. It runs a thousand kilometres along the southern Caspian and holds 3,200 species of vascular plant, Persian leopard and brown bear. Ramian sits inside it, at 226 metres above sea level, in a county of 86,000 people who grow rice and raise sheep and weave a striped cloth called chadorshab.
Eight kilometres south of the town the ground stands up abruptly. In just over three kilometres of horizontal distance it goes from 440 m in the valley to 1,249 m at the Al Hadi launch, and keeps climbing south past 1,450 m towards the main Alborz crest. That is the whole site in one sentence: a steep, green, seaward-facing wall with the Gorgan plain spread out beyond it.
What you get, when it works, is something closer to Alpine flying than to desert flying — lower cloudbase, a real plain-and-mountain breeze system, ridges you can soar and thermals that trigger off the shoulders. Cross Country Magazine’s country guide makes the same distinction, describing the northern Caspian sites as “similar to flying in the Alps: a ‘real’ mountain range with valley winds and lower cloudbase,” against a south that is desert. Ramian is emphatically the former.
And then there is the part that is difficult to say plainly without sounding like marketing, so here is the evidence instead. Ramian has an artificial-grass launch — reportedly the first in the Middle East — with a bar and toilets on the hill. It has two competing clubs running five registered take-offs. It has three reported fatalities since 2016. It is, by any measure, an established site. And on the international flight databases that log where the world’s pilots actually fly, it has essentially no record at all. Whatever else Ramian is, it is unfinished business.
The weather machine
The single most important thing to understand about Ramian is that its flyable season and the regional prevailing wind are the same phenomenon.
Ramian works because of the Gorgan plain. Beyond the foothills the ground runs flat and unbroken for tens of kilometres — north to the Turkmen steppe, and west to the Caspian Sea about 95 km away. From 9 April to 12 October the prevailing surface wind at Ramian is from the north, in off that plain, peaking at 53 % frequency around 8 July. From 12 October to 1 March the flow reverses to southerly, peaking at 51 % on 1 January: over the back of the ridge, and into the lee.
The complication: the flow does not arrive from due north
This is the most important thing on the page, and it is the one thing you will not find anywhere else.
The terrain model puts the fall line below the Flyland launch at roughly 293°, west-north-west. A due-north wind is therefore around 65° cross to the main face. Worse, sampling the ground due north of the launch shows it does not run away to the plain at all: it drops into a valley at 567 m about a kilometre out, then rises to a separate ridge of 1,019 m some 3.2 km north — two hundred metres higher than the launch — before finally falling to the plain at around 210 m beyond eight kilometres. So what reconciles a north-prevailing climatology with a west-north-west-facing hill that has higher ground to its north? Almost certainly the valley in front of the launch. The ground below the take-off falls to 450 m within 1.2 km and that valley drains north-west onto the plain. The regional northerly is drawn into it and turns; by the time it reaches the launch it is arriving from the west-north-west, which is exactly where the ground goes away. That is consistent with the community ratings — N, NW and W all rated usable, NW rated primary at three of the four ridge launches.
What this means for you, practically
Do not arrive in July expecting to park on a north wind at a hill that faces west-north-west. Ask the local pilots what the wind actually does on launch at 11:00 and at 15:00, and how it differs from what the forecast says for the plain. This paragraph is terrain reasoning, not testimony — but it is the kind of thing that ends flights, and no published source addresses it. Derived
What that means on the hill
Mean wind speeds at Ramian are gentle all year: from 8.4 km/h in November to 10.1 km/h in June and July. Those are monthly means, so they say nothing about afternoon peaks — but they do suggest a thermic site rather than a wind-driven one, where staying up is more likely to mean working thermals than parking on a soaring band. The wind figures are Reported; the reading of them is ours Derived.
The other climate fact worth planning around: August is the clearest month and March the cloudiest, with overcast or mostly cloudy skies 45 % of the time in March. That, combined with the wind reversal, is what makes late spring through early autumn the obvious window. Reported
A note on the March westerlies. The chart shows a distinct westerly-prevailing spell from 1 March to 9 April, and west is a primary direction at Flyland. On paper that should be a second season. In practice March is the cloudiest month of the year here, which is probably why nobody talks about it — but if you are looking for an unfashionable window, that is where to look. Derived
The Caspian region as a whole is the wettest part of Iran, taking 800–1,400 mm a year with an autumn maximum and a summer minimum, and humidity at 70–85 % year-round. Climatological references note specifically that the eastern plains around Gorgan are drier than the western Caspian, so Ramian sits at the dry end of a wet coast. Summer is not reliably sunny; thunderstorms occur. Reported
A number we are deliberately not giving you
The one widely-syndicated rainfall figure for Ramian — roughly 100 mm a year — is almost certainly wrong by an order of magnitude. It derives from reanalysis data that performs badly in steep terrain, and it contradicts every regional source for a town sitting inside a temperate rainforest. A blank is more useful to you than a wrong number. If you have station data from the Iran Meteorological Organization, send it. Unverified
What nobody has published about flying here
We searched in English and Persian, across flight databases, club sites, Iranian news, video descriptions and forum archives. We could not find a single source that describes cloudbase, climb rates, when the day switches on, thermal character, glass-off behaviour or convergence at Ramian. Not one. If you read those figures somewhere, ask where they came from.
What we can tell you is what the terrain and the climatology imply, clearly labelled as inference — see In the air.
The mountain
Positions are as published, each cross-checked against a 30-metre terrain model. The relief is real elevation data, not an illustration.
Four of the five launches — Flyland, Ramian 2, Ramian 3 and Al Hadi — sit on one continuous ridge that climbs from west to east, gaining 430 m over 1.9 km. Flyland is the lowest and most westerly, on a blunt spur that pushes out into the plain. Al Hadi is the highest and furthest inland. The landing is 2.8 km west of Al Hadi on the valley floor, and every one of the four glides to it on a bearing between 235° and 270°.
The fifth, Pa Qale, is a different site entirely: 3.6 km south-west, facing east and south-east, on the opposite side of a valley. Treat it as a separate decision, not an alternative launch.
Panel A is the good news: a launch face with a long, unobstructed, evenly-graded approach — 33 % over the first 200 m, 43 % through the 200–400 m band, settling to about 24 % below that. There is nothing on that slope to trip air up.
Panel B is the thing to think about. The clean fall-away is to the west and north-west, not to the north. Due north there is higher ground within a few kilometres, and to the south the ground behind the launch is higher still: 1.5 km back it drops into a rear valley at 517 m before the main Alborz rises past 1,450 m. Any southerly component is arriving over a ridge and a valley before it reaches you. That is the mechanism behind the reported rotor.
The launches
Five registered take-offs. Coordinates and elevations are verified against terrain data; everything about the ground itself is thinner, and marked accordingly.
Reading the wind roses
Solid gold = a primary direction. Pale gold = workable but secondary. Grey = not a launch direction. Ratings come from the ParaglidingEarth community database Reported. The dashed cyan line is the true slope aspect we measured from the terrain model Derived — where it agrees with the gold, the community rating is independently corroborated.
Flyland Ramian 1 · سرزمین پرواز · the main launch
This is the site everyone means when they say Ramian. It is the developed launch — the only one of the five with a published fee schedule, a public presence and, unusually for anywhere in the region, an artificial-grass take-off, reported to be the first of its kind in the Middle East. There is a bar and there are toilets. Whoever built it was building for volume.
The geometry is generous. It sits on a west-pointing spur, so the ground falls away on the west and the north-west, and the 3.5:1 needed to reach the landing is undemanding for a modern wing in still air — you are normally choosing when to leave rather than gliding out on a marginal day. Add wind, sink and a pattern height and the margin shrinks; it does not disappear.
The one hazard anybody has written down applies here. The source says exactly this and no more: “Be careful: left of the launch is a rotor area.” It does not say left of what. Read as “left when facing out” it means the southern flank, and the terrain supports that — the ridge rises steeply immediately east and south-east, so anything with south in it spills broken air onto that side. Read the other way it would mean the north flank. Get this resolved on launch before you fly it. Reported, direction Unverified
Ramian 2 300 m east of Flyland, same ridge
Fifty-four metres higher than Flyland, and 300 m further along the ridge. The notable difference is the window: Ramian 2 is registered without a west rating, only north and north-west. That is consistent with the terrain — this point sits slightly further back on the ridge line, so the clean west-facing fall-off that Flyland enjoys is not there.
Nothing has been published about its surface, its access or how it is used. It reads as an intermediate launch on the same face rather than a distinct site, and in practice you would go there on a local’s advice or not at all.
Ramian 3 1.05 km east of Flyland, +245 m
The narrowest window of the four ridge launches: north-west primary, west secondary, nothing else. A north-west-only launch on a site whose prevailing summer wind is due north is a launch you use on specific days, not by default.
In exchange you get 600 m of vertical, which on a working day is the difference between a sled ride and a flight.
Al Hadi الهادی · 1.9 km ESE of Flyland · the high launch
The serious one. Al Hadi gives you 785 m of vertical and a due-west 2.8 km glide to the landing — more than twice Flyland’s working height, and 430 m higher up the same ridge. Whether that extra height buys you an earlier start, a better line, or simply a longer glide is something only a local can tell you; nobody has published a word about how the two launches compare in the air.
It is run by a different organisation: the Arshia aviation club out of Gonbad-e Kavus, not Flyland. That matters practically — separate contacts, separate permissions, possibly separate fees. Do not assume that arranging Flyland arranges Al Hadi. Reported
Pa Qale پاقلعه · 3.6 km SW · a separate, opposite-facing site
Pa Qale sits 3.6 km south-west of Flyland and faces east, south-east and south — the exact opposite of the ridge launches. On the face of it that is a gift: a site that works when the main hill does not. It shares its name with a summer village in the Hyrcanian forest about 10 km from Ramian town.
Do not trust the published landing for this launch
The ParaglidingEarth record assigns Pa Qale the same landing zone as all four ridge launches — 36.9350, 55.1232, which sits 2.3 km away on the far side of a valley from an east-and-south-east-facing launch. One identical landing across five records on two different aspects is the signature of a default value pasted in, not of a surveyed field. Treat Pa Qale’s landing as undocumented and do not fly there without seeing the real one from the ground first. Unverified

All four ridge launches need within 0.1 of the same glide, which follows from their sitting on one broadly uniform face — it is a description of the hillside, not an independent check on anything. The actual check on the coordinates is that all six positions were re-queried against a terrain model and agreed with the database elevations to within 6 m.
The landing
All four ridge launches share one landing zone on the valley floor at 36.9350, 55.1232, elevation 464 m. That position and elevation are verified — the database record and the terrain model agree to the metre. Everything else about the field is undocumented.
What the terrain says: the landing sits on a valley floor running roughly north–south. Sampling the ground around it gives 453 m at 400 m north, 472 m at 400 m south, 494 m at 300 m west and 499 m at 300 m east — a rise of about 35 m in 300 m on the side you are coming from. This is a valley-bottom field with rising ground on the approach, not an open plain. Derived
What is not documented about this field
- Its dimensions. Nobody has published a size.
- Its surface — grass, crop, gravel, stubble. Unknown, and it may be seasonal.
- Power lines, fences, irrigation channels, trees. Not one source mentions obstacles either way.
- Whether there are alternate or emergency landings, and where.
- Whether the field is owned, rented or permitted, and by whom.
- The circuit direction and whether one is mandated.
Given three fatalities at this site, that gap matters. Walk the field before you fly above it — which is standard practice anywhere, and non-negotiable here. Unverified
One structural point in the site’s favour: with 355 m of height even from the lowest launch and only 1.25 km to cover, you arrive with options. The glide is not the problem. The problem is that you will be setting up an approach into a field you have only read about — so don’t.
In the air
This section is inference, clearly labelled. No published source describes what the air does at Ramian, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Everything below is reasoning from verified terrain and climate data
Treat it as a hypothesis to test against what a local pilot tells you on launch — not as a briefing. Where a local contradicts this page, the local is right. Derived
What the terrain and climate imply
A plain-breeze day, not a classic mountain day. The dominant forcing is a northerly flow in off a hundred kilometres of flat, heated ground rather than a valley wind cycling up a gorge. That usually means a later, softer start than an inland site, a long usable middle of the day, and a wind that builds rather than switches.
Convergence is likely and worth looking for. Where a steady inflow off a heated plain meets thermally-driven air rising off a steep, dark, forested mountain face, a convergence line along the ridge is the textbook outcome. If Ramian has a signature, this is where to look for it — a working line running along the face rather than isolated cores.
The forest changes the trigger pattern. Dense Hyrcanian broadleaf is a poor thermal source compared with rock or dry ground: it is wet, it transpires, and it holds heat differently. On sites like this the reliable triggers are usually breaks in the canopy — clearings, spurs, bare ground — rather than the forest itself, but nobody has written down where Ramian’s are. It also means fewer safe landing options under you than the map’s green suggests — see hazards.
Lower cloudbase than the Iranian sites you have heard about. Cross Country Magazine characterises the northern Caspian sites as Alpine-like with lower cloudbase, in explicit contrast to the 6,000–7,000 m bases of the central and southern desert sites. High humidity (70–85 % year round) points the same way. Do not arrive expecting Rokh. Reported
Overdevelopment is a real risk. Summer in the Caspian region is described as “not always sunny,” with cloudy days and thunderstorms. A humid airmass over a steep heated face is a recipe for early overdevelopment. Plan to be down before the day builds, not after.
The questions to ask a local before you launch
- What time does it switch on, and what time does the north wind get too strong for the top launch?
- Where does the first reliable thermal trigger?
- Is there a convergence line, and which side of the ridge does it sit on?
- What is a good cloudbase here, and what is a poor one?
- Where do you not go, and why?
- Where would you land if you left the ridge going east?
If you get answers to these, please send them to us. They are the missing half of this page and they would make it the only real account of flying Ramian in any language.
Cross-country potential
Ramian’s cross-country record is, as far as the public international record goes, empty. The community database flags all five launches as thermal, soaring and XC capable. But the flight-log aggregators that ingest XContest and similar data report no logged flights for these launches, and no distance, route or record from Ramian appears anywhere we could find. Cross Country Magazine’s Iran country guide — which names Rokh, Kerend-e Gharb, Veis, Seydan, Shahran and Hemat — does not mention Golestan at all.
That absence is informative rather than damning. Iranian pilots may log domestically or not at all, and a site can be flown hard for twenty years without a single track reaching an international server. But it does mean that anyone telling you Ramian’s XC potential is proven is telling you something they cannot know, and it means a visiting pilot with a tracker is doing genuinely original work.
What the geometry allows
The site’s XC shape is constrained in a way that is worth understanding before you plan a route:
- North is a hard stop. The nearest point of the Turkmenistan border is about 70 km north-west of the launch, near the Incheh Borun crossing; due north it is about 113 km. In the Iranian context this is not a boundary to be respected loosely. Plan nothing that drifts toward it. Derived
- West runs at an airport. Gorgan Airport (GBT / OING) is 65 km due west. The site itself is comfortably clear of it, but a westbound run down the range points straight at controlled airspace. Derived
- South is the wall. Ground rises past 1,450 m within 5 km and keeps going into the main Alborz. Crossing behind the ridge in a northerly puts you in the lee of increasingly serious terrain.
- East–west along the range is the natural line. That is where the ridge runs, where the other Golestan sites sit — Tarseh, Rig Cheshmeh, Zangolab, Tangerah — and where the convergence, if it exists, would run. A 42 km ridge run east to Tarseh, or the long line north-east toward Tangerah, are the obvious first questions.
Set against that: the whole Golestan cluster of nine registered sites sits within 95 km of Ramian, two of them winch fields on the plain. That is a lot of documented free-flight infrastructure for a region with no public flight record — which suggests the flying exists and the logging does not.

The safety record
We include this because a guide that leaves it out is not telling you the truth about the site. Each entry below reports what the source said; where we add an interpretation, it is tagged as one.
Three separate fatalities at Ramian are documented in Iranian media between 2016 and 2022, plus one non-fatal rescue. For a single site in a country whose entire paragliding fatality record has been the subject of national news round-ups, that is a substantial number and it belongs in any honest account.

There is also evidence that the site has been closed and later reopened at least once — a Persian-language club post announcing the “reopening of the Flyland Ramian flying site” following what appears to have been a broader temporary suspension of paragliding sites in Iran. The dates and reasons could not be recovered. Confirm the site is actually operating before you travel. Reported
Our editorial assessment of pilot level
Solid intermediate and up, with a local briefing — not a place to convert your licence. The reasoning: steep clean launch faces with generous glide margin (which argues easy), set against a documented rotor zone, an undocumented landing, dense forest under most of the terrain, no published information on the daily cycle, and a real fatality record (which argues otherwise). Roughly IPPI 4 / P3 / CP+ as a floor, and higher for Al Hadi and for anything leaving the ridge. Getting there
The launches sit 8.2 km south of Ramian town, which is at 226 m — so the access road climbs around 600 m. Ramian is 76 km from Gorgan and 487 km from Tehran by road. The nearest airport is Gorgan (GBT / OING), a few kilometres north of Gorgan and roughly 85 km by road from Ramian, with domestic flights to Tehran-Mehrabad, Kish and Zahedan.
The single biggest gap on this page
We could not establish the road. Not its number, not its surface, not whether a 2WD makes it, not the drive time, not whether it closes in winter. Iranian mapping sites and OpenStreetMap query services were both unreachable during research.
What we can infer: a launch with artificial turf, a bar and toilets is not supplied on foot. There is a vehicle road to Flyland. Whether it is asphalt or a 4×4 track, and what it does in the wet, we do not know — and in a wet Caspian-forest climate, “what it does in the wet” is a real question. Ask the operator when you book. Fees, permits and the legal reality
This is the section every other Iran guide skips, and the one every visiting pilot actually needs. It is also where guessing would do the most damage, so where the answer is unknown it says so.
A foreign pilot cannot simply arrive at Ramian and fly. Two separate layers of permission apply. At national level, Western pilots need a flying permit and — this is the important part — a named, well-known local pilot who takes legal responsibility for them. Solo flying by visitors is actively discouraged, principally because of military airspace. At site level, Flyland charges foreign pilots €10 per flight and checks your licence before you fly.
What is confirmed
- Site fee: €10 per flight for foreign pilots at Flyland; licence verification required. Shuttle 150,000 toman per ride. Reported

What is not confirmed — and matters
- The permit procedure itself. Which form, which office, what lead time, what fee, national or provincial. No public source in any language documents it. This is the largest single unknown for a visiting pilot and we would rather say so than invent a process.
- Whether an IPPI / FAI card is recognised. Iran’s FAI membership since 1998 makes it plausible in principle, but no source confirms Iran accepts IPPI from visiting pilots, and the permit system appears to work through local sponsorship rather than licence reciprocity. Bring the card; expect it to be necessary but not sufficient.
- Whether Al Hadi and Pa Qale are covered by the same arrangement as Flyland. Different club, probably different answer.
Equipment you should think hard about
- Your wing and harness: we found no prohibition or restriction — but that is an absence of evidence, not a clearance. Unverified All items must be declared at customs — undeclared goods can be treated as smuggling, which is a serious offence. Carry proof of ownership and a letter from your Iranian host explaining what the equipment is for. Reported
- Vario / GPS logger: no explicit prohibition found. But GPS-enabled devices attract scrutiny, and published guidance for travellers to Iran is blunt about how quickly that can escalate.
- Satellite communicators (Garmin inReach, SPOT) and Starlink: widely reported as prohibited or heavily restricted. Leave them at home. The downside risk is detention, not confiscation. Reported
- Drones: technically permitted only with a permit from the Civil Aviation Organization of Iran, and prohibited near military zones and within 2 km of airports. Every practical guide says the same thing: do not bring one. Reported
- Action cameras: treat an aerial camera with the same care as a drone. Photographing military installations, airports, government buildings or nuclear facilities is a serious matter, and foreign nationals have been detained on charges arising from photography. Agree with your host, before launch, what you may film. Reported
- VHF / PMR radios: transmitting equipment is restricted. Ask your host rather than assuming your retrieve radio is fine.
Why the “local responsible pilot” rule exists
In May 2013 eight Slovak paragliders were arrested in Iran on spying allegations, reportedly over photography near sensitive sites. Six were released that September; the last two were freed in December, after more than two hundred days. Accounts from foreign pilots who have flown in Iran since describe a system built directly around that precedent: a named local pilot bears legal responsibility for the visitor’s compliance, flying is done from known sites, and landing outside a designated zone is reported. This is not bureaucratic friction to be routed around — it is the mechanism that makes visiting legal at all. Verified
A note on how old all of this is. The most detailed first-hand accounts of foreign pilots flying in Iran date from 2013–2017. We found no documented foreign-pilot trip report from 2020 or later. Every procedural detail above should be re-confirmed with a local contact before you act on it.
If it goes wrong
Plan on the assumption that no helicopter is coming and your insurance does not cover you. Iranian mountain rescue is ground-based, run by the Red Crescent and mountaineering teams. No commercial mountain HEMS service comparable to Alpine heli-rescue is documented. Most Western travel insurers will not cover Iran at all, and those that cover the country generally exclude paragliding.

The insurance problem, stated plainly
- Most Western travel insurers exclude Iran outright — typically on two grounds at once: US sanctions, and a “Do Not Travel” advisory.
- Paragliding is separately excluded by most standard policies even where the country is not.
- Iran requires travel insurance for the visa — meaning you will probably end up holding an Iranian-issued policy whose free-flight cover should be assumed inadequate.
- Specialist high-risk providers exist. If you use one, get written confirmation that it covers both Iran and paragliding before you rely on it.
What that means for how you fly here
- Fly within reach of a vehicle. Do not go over the back into the forest on a whim.
- Treat self-rescue and ground evacuation as the baseline plan, not the fallback.
- Agree a retrieve plan and a “we call someone at” time before launch, in writing, with your host.
- Assume you may have no connectivity. Iran has implemented severe internet restrictions and near-total shutdowns. Carry offline maps and a written plan. A phone is not a safety system here.
- Nearest hospitals are in Azadshahr and Gonbad-e Kavus, roughly 30 km away; Gorgan, 76 km, for anything major.
Practicalities
Money — read this one twice
No international bank card works in Iran. Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay: none of them function anywhere in the country, because the banking system is disconnected from international networks. This catches out more visitors than anything else on this page.
The two workable options are cash — clean, undamaged euro or dollar notes — and a prepaid tourist debit card issued in Iran, several of which are marketed to visitors with hotel delivery and a refund of the unused balance on departure. Budget your entire trip in cash before you arrive. Also learn the toman/rial distinction: prices are quoted colloquially in toman, and 1 toman = 10 rials.
Connectivity
- Local SIMs from Irancell or Hamrah-e Aval, bought at the airport with your passport, are cheap — a few dollars for around 10 GB. Mobile data is more reliable than hotel wi-fi.
- Many Western services are blocked. Install a VPN before you arrive — VPN websites are themselves usually unreachable from inside Iran.
- Plan for the possibility of no connectivity at all. This has direct safety consequences for retrieve and weather.
Getting around
- Snapp is the dominant ride-hailing app, but it needs an Iranian phone number.
- Intercity buses are extensive and cheap; domestic flights run on Iranian carriers.
- Self-driving is legal with an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence, but most visiting pilots ride with locals — which is also how retrieve works.
- International air service is dominated by Iranian carriers on a reduced and cancellation-prone schedule.
Dress and social norms on the hill
Headscarf and modest dress are legally required for women in public, including visitors; men should avoid shorts in most public settings. How this interacts in practice with a flying suit, harness and helmet — what women pilots actually wear on launch and in the air — is not documented anywhere we could find, and Iran has an established, visible community of women paraglider pilots who would know. Alcohol is completely prohibited and cannot be brought into the country. There is no post-flight beer here.

A practical note echoed by every foreign pilot who has written about flying in Iran: the way in is through people, not paperwork. Visiting pilots consistently describe being collected at the airport, hosted in someone’s home, and driven around for retrieve. Make contact well before you travel — it is not a formality, it is the mechanism.
Nearby sites
Golestan has an unusually dense cluster of registered sites — nine within 95 km of Ramian, including two winch fields on the plain. The most useful pairing is Tangerah: 75 km north-east, 1,240 m, and facing S / SW / W — almost the exact mirror of Ramian’s N / NW / W. Between the two you cover most of the compass, which turns a weather-dependent trip into a workable one.

When it’s not flyable
Ramian is inside one of the most remarkable landscapes in Iran, and the rain that makes the forest is the same rain that will occasionally ground you. Within a short drive of the launch:
- Gol-e Ramian spring — locally billed as the deepest cold-water spring in Iran and the second deepest in the world at 44–80 m. The world claim does not survive contact with a list of deep springs, but the pool is real and swimming in it is prohibited. Unverified
- The Red Kemer waterfalls — eight cascades, the highest around 28 m.
- Jozak waterfall, 3 km from town — a staircase cascade.
- Maran Castle, 12 km away at 2,430 m — a 60-hectare Seljuk-period fortress.
- Pa Qale village, 10 km out in the Hyrcanian forest — the same name as launch 5, a traditional summer settlement.
- Nilbarg and Olang forests — the latter used for winter skiing.
- Shirabad waterfall, one of Golestan’s best-known walks.
The Hyrcanian Forests were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage property in 2019 (boundary modified 2023) under criterion (ix), across 17 component parts in Iran and Azerbaijan, covering 145,005 hectares with a further 219,431 hectares of buffer. They stretch about 1,000 km along the southern Caspian, are 25–50 million years old, and hold over 3,200 vascular plant species, 180 bird species and 58 mammal species including Persian leopard and brown bear. OpenAIP carries 398 airspaces for Iran — ATZ, CTR, CTA, TMA and military training zones — and the file can be loaded into XCTrack as custom airspace. Two warnings. First, entries are categorised by class and type rather than explicitly labelled prohibited or restricted, so prohibited-area coverage cannot be assumed complete. Second, it is community-maintained data with no guarantee of currency, in a country where airspace structure has been changing. Use it, and do not rely on it. Reported
Questions pilots actually ask
In principle yes, in practice only with local arrangement. Foreign pilots in Iran need a flying permit and a named local pilot who takes responsibility for them; at the site itself, Flyland charges €10 per flight and checks your licence. Solo flying by visitors is discouraged nationally because of military airspace. The exact permit procedure is not publicly documented — start by contacting the operator or the Iran Airsports Association.
On the evidence available, May to September. From 9 April to 12 October the prevailing surface wind is northerly — in off the Gorgan plain toward the N/NW/W launches — peaking at 53 % frequency in early July. August is the clearest month. From 12 October to March the flow reverses to southerly, which puts the launches in the lee. No operator has published a stated season, so this is inference from wind climatology rather than testimony.
There are five launches. The main one, Flyland, is at 819 m with 355 m to the landing at 464 m. The highest, Al Hadi, is at 1,249 m with 785 m of vertical. Ramian 2 is 873 m, Ramian 3 is 1,064 m, and Pa Qale — a separate east-facing site — is 1,206 m. All elevations are cross-checked against SRTM terrain data.
The four ridge launches face north through west: Flyland takes N, NW and W as primary with NE secondary; Ramian 2 is N and NW only; Ramian 3 is NW primary with W secondary; Al Hadi is NW primary with N and W secondary. Pa Qale, 3.6 km south-west, is the mirror image — E and SE primary, S secondary. Southerly flow puts the main launches in the lee and feeds a documented rotor area on the south flank of Flyland.
Between 3.5:1 and 3.6: 1 from any of the four ridge launches, in still air with no sink — 1.25 km from Flyland, 2.80 km from Al Hadi. That is comfortable on any modern wing: an 8: 1 glide from Al Hadi arrives roughly 435 m above the field. On this evidence the glide home is not the hard part here — but those are still-air numbers, and a headwind, a sink cycle or a long final all eat into the margin.
Our assessment is solid intermediate and up, with a local briefing — roughly IPPI 4 / P3 / CP+ as a floor, and more for Al Hadi. The launches are steep and clean and the glide margin is generous, but there is a documented rotor zone, an entirely undocumented landing field, dense forest under most of the terrain, no published information on the daily cycle, and three fatalities reported since 2016. No official rating for the site has been published; this is our editorial judgement.
Ramian is 487 km from Tehran and 76 km from Gorgan by road. The nearest airport is Gorgan (GBT / OING), 6 km north of Gorgan, with domestic flights to Tehran-Mehrabad, Kish and Zahedan. The launches are 8.2 km south of Ramian town, up a road that climbs about 600 m — the surface and vehicle requirement of that road are not documented, so ask the operator.
Undocumented. No flight logs, distances, routes or records from Ramian appear in the public international record, and Cross Country Magazine’s Iran guide does not mention Golestan. Geometrically, the natural line is east–west along the range toward Tarseh and Tangerah; north is bounded by the Turkmenistan border about 70 km north-west, west runs toward Gorgan’s airspace at 65 km, and south is the main Alborz wall. A visiting pilot with a tracker would be doing original work.

- ? Any XC flight data. Distances, directions, records, month-by-month activity. The international databases have nothing.
- ? The permit procedure for a foreign pilot. Which office, what form, how long, how much.
- ? Whether IPPI cards are recognised in Iran for visiting pilots.
